Service Supply Chains vs Service Logistics

Service Logistics is often narrowly described
Service Logistics is much more than spare parts management. It is the logistics of after-sales service covering all aspects from sales to the ‘end of life’ of a product. The challenge is to manage the cohesion between all these elements like call centers, (remote) diagnosis, service engineers, spare parts, tools, repair centers, reverse, recycling etc. Service Logistics is the control tower and determines the success of the after-sales service to a high extent.

Service Logistics high on the innovation calendar in The Netherlands
Service Logistics ranks high on the innovation calendar in the Netherlands. It is part of the innovation subsidy program of the Dutch government and consequently one of the five innovation themes of Dinalog (Dutch Institute of Advanced Logistics).  Within the broad definition of service logistics a growing number of research programs and demonstration projects aims at the development and implementation of innovative concepts in the service chain. Just to mention a few subjects: “condition based maintenance”, “shared parts business model”, “shared services” and “last time buy of service parts”.

SLF network
SLF is the platform for national and multinational companies with service and service logistics operations of strategic importance, e.g. companies operating in B2B and B2C markets, large enterprises and SMB companies, service providers, OEM, software-companies, government, public utilities, transportation companies, but also research universities and universities of applied sciences. Senior managers or professionals responsible for service and service logistics are the prime target for the SLF network.
A broad spectrum of SLF activities
To realize the SLF objectives a broad spectrum of activities are organised:

  • Practical workshops for SLF participants 3 times a year. Science and business come together for interesting discussions in these workshops. See next page for an overview of the workshops since 2005
  • A yearly service logistics summit with many company case studies and scientific cases.  The summit is free for SLF participants and for a fee also open to non-SLF participants.
  • Round-table meetings about explicit subjects on request of SLF participants.
  • Supporting the valorisation of service logistics research by research universities and universities of applied sciences.
  • SLF yearly awards the prize for the best Master and Bachelor thesis in service logistics.
